CDL Driver’s License
A CDL, or Commercial Driver's License, allows you to operate a CMV, or commercial motor vehicle. A CMV is qualified as any sort of vehicle used to transport. This includes heavy machinery, semi trucks, 18-wheelers, and other dynamic industrial equipment.
This type of driver's license is necessary for most jobs in the transportation industry, the construction industry, and for school or city bus operation in most states. It requires both the knowledge of several areas of vehicle operation as well as the proven execution of certain physical tasks. There are several endorsements and restrictions that can be applied to a CDL, and what you decide to obtain depends on the type of vehicle you want to operate.
CDL Driver’s License Endorsements
Drivers who operate trucks interstate, intrastate, or in foreign territories all must have a valid basic commercial driver's license. CDL training is usually tailored to meet the specific needs of your industry. If you are transporting hazardous materials, for instance, you must have a CDL that is endorsed with an "H" classification.
If you want to operate double or triple trailers, you must obtain a "T" classification on your CDL. Passenger drivers must secure a "P" endorsement, and so on. Each of these additional areas requires a written knowledge test. In order to pass these tests, you must receive proper training.
