Truck Driver Pay
How Much Money Can A Trucker Earn?
Truck driver pay is calculated differently than almost any other jobs. Over the road truck drivers are paid per mile driven. So for every mile the truck is driven, the trucker earns a set per mile rate of pay. A trucker’s mileage rate is multiplied by the number of miles driven to determine his weekly pay. To make more money, a driver must drive more miles.
Per mile pay for newly trained drivers working for a Driver Solutions Network company can start at up to $.28. Typically, about every 3 months or so of employment, the trucking company will raise the mileage pay rate by about a penny. Though it doesn’t seem like a penny would make any difference in a paycheck, by the end of one year, those raises will add up to a great yearly salary!
As 1st year truck driver with a Driver Solutions trucking company, a new trucker has the potential to earn up to $40,000. And by the second or third year of driving, a driver has the opportunity to earn well over $50,000 a year!
Differences Between Solo & Team Driver Pay
Solo drivers face more limits to the number of miles that can be driven than team drivers. Hours of service regulations impact the amount of time a driver can spend behind the wheel before taking a required break or being off duty. When solo driver has to take a break, the truck stops rolling. But solo drivers earn a higher mileage pay rate than team drivers.
Team drivers are paid for miles the truck is driven just like solo drivers. A team driver mileage rate is typically a lower rate of pay compared to a solo driver. But just because the mileage rate is lower, it doesn’t mean that team drivers earn less. Here’s why: a team can drive more miles than solo driver in the same amount of time. Unlike a solo driver that has to shut down his truck, team drivers simply swap places with one team driver behind the wheel while the other driver takes his required break.
